The Roundup: Basel Breakdown, Art and Algorithms, Remembering Barbara Gladstone
Welcome to the Art Angle, a podcast from Artnet News that delves into the places where the art world meets the real world, bringing each week’s biggest story down to earth. Join us every week for an in-depth look at what matters most in museums, the art market, and much more, with input from our own writers and editors, as well as artists, curators, and other top experts in the field.
Although the art business world may be on holiday right now, we're still pounding the (international) pavement to bring you a report of the most important and talked-about events in the art world right now. This week, hosts Kate Brown and Ben Davis are joined by Artnet's London correspondent Vivienne Chow for the monthly roundup.
Just two short weeks ago collectors, curators, museum bigwigs, and celebrities arrived in Basel Switzerland for Art Basel's flagship event. Dealers were quick to announce big-ticket sales, but there was an undercurrent of conversation regarding the so-called "doom porn" narrative swirling in the press. As Artnet News's Katya Kazakina has been reporting, the market is in the midst of a major correction.
Beyond the fair, where well-heeled visitors traipsed between the installation of Agnes Denes's iconic Wheat Fields and the beloved cow pastures, there was lots to see. In a recent editorial, host Kate Brown wrote about how social media algorithms are affecting performance art, and the trio discuss this trend in relation to the activations in and around the fair. Finally, the trio discuss the life and legacy of Barbara Gladstone, the highly esteemed art dealer who passed away at age 89.

There's no denying that we live in an era of crisis, from geopolitical strife to economic squeezes and widening wealth disparity. Looming behind all of that is the ecological devastation brought on by climate change. All of these challenges have had an impact on the art market and the wider cultural sector writ large. Artists, galleries, museums, and cultural policy-makers are all looking for w...
How Warhol's Handmade Art Shaped His Famed Pop Factory
Переглядів 14128 днів тому
With his themes of repetition and appropriation, Andy Warhol’s work can seem mass produced. He was prone to say that his assistants did his work for him and often invented different narratives in interviews. In fact, weaving tall tales and shaping his own mythology was another important aspect of his art: he was creating the ultimate persona of an artist every bit as Pop as his paintings, one w...

The Art Angle Podcast: Andrew Bolton, The Reanimator: Life, Death, and Sleeping Beauties at the Met

There is a lot to unpack-literally and figuratively-in the Metropolitan Museum’s new Costume Institute show, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” which opens on Friday May 10. It’s about nature and the cycle of life (and as it turns out, there is a lot about death). It also touches on chemistry, biology, mythology, and so much more, all told through the lens of fashion. Added to this litany...

As anyone who has been listening to this show recently will already know, the world's largest and most closely scrutinized art event-the Venice Biennale- is now open in Italy. For the 2024 Biennale, among the most talked about is that of the United States, which chose Jeff...

I feel like a central concept of connoisseurship is being amateur, in the non-pejorative sense.

  • @lindagriggs8024

I think you're right that the word connoisseurship is generational. It's been replaced with "geek" which is fair. It has also been democratized because now you can be a wine geek or an opera geek. Geek is no longer an insulting term. A geek is just somebody who knows something about something. A dork is still an insulting term and usually it's earned since dorks are almost always rude and mean as well awkward.

I used time to explain connoisseurship to financial people when I temped in their offices by saying it was the difference between investing and trading.

No coverage of The Bellilli Family? It's not Olympia in importance but wow, the tension in that family, the oldere daughter looking to her dad. Her dad being excluded...it's amazing. It was on my bucket list for years and when I went to Paris it was out on loan. I was thrilled to see it in that show.

The originator of this "movement" decided he would choose a male, white artist to denigrate. He was trying to point out the white, male favoritism in the art world when it comes to the classics. He then chose Renoir. His original thought is not without merit. Yet he put the cart before the horse, making his opinion meaningless. And these protestors should really know better than to support someone with an agenda.

I’m glad the shark work was made but it has not aged well historically. When I look at it I just think of Hurst work as big money art for collectors to buy. No shock value left to it.

The Legend Of Zelda is NOT procedurally generated wtf lol. The levels are all designed and the landscapes/terrain as well. Everything is handcrafted. The game (BOTW & TOTK) massive world and the art are designed, drawn, painted, made by human artists. It’s not procedural. There’s only one world. Zelda is NOT a procedurally generated game.

What a load of rubbish. The priority should have been to adhere to the intent of the will, which was to have it on display in Austria. And, if it was true that her niece deserved and wanted the painting of her aunt so much because of sentimental value, then why, right after acquiring it, did she sell it immediately? Why, at least, didn't she hold on to it until she passed away? Couldn't even wait that long. Money is the reason ($135mil). Btw, the reason it is "worth" so much, is mostly due to the Austrian museum and their promotion of it over the decades since the war. If it had always been in private hands, it would be worth a fraction of that.

It's off to criticize a person who experienced failure/ hardship as an artist, & then progressed on to be an art critic expert/ seeing tons of art, for writing about art/ being an artist. My daily Word this morning, spoke how it is the negativity, the hardships, that allow us to then experience the goodness of God, as pointed out by great thinkers over the ages. Light shines in darkness. It is precisely because Jerry Saltz experienced the hardship / failure side of art, that he can have some insight into the pitfalls, as well as the hope, toward having the life in art that you are called to. I cherish his book on How to Be an Artist, (that I'm currently reading). I can use all the help I can get, from many sources. I especially need his 'Get to work you big baby,' because I've done tons of college study, research, period of discernment; study of how to have an art practice; many bus rides to carry one 90 lb bag of cement home at a time; & prep in every possible way, & I'm just about to get started with an ongoing, never ceasing art practice. So glad to hear the #1 thing I'm missing. ha ha. LOL. Blessings everyone. Peace. Love wins. Jesus is real. I've seen proof! Ask me how i know. Love you art people everywhere. God is good.

The moment these twits start to talk about abstract art they simply highlight their own shadow fatuous personalities. 90% of it is nothing worth talking about. It's decoration - decorative art.

This was fun and interesting. I’m surprised there are no comments but it was challenging to determine where to comment. Lacking other locations, I’m commenting on UA-cam. I was hoping that the participants would comment on pieces in their personal collection. The instructions did not say to choose a famous work of art, just a work of art. I have a collection of many fairly inexpensive pieces and some expensive pieces. Many of the inexpensive pieces give me a great deal of joy having nothing to do with their fame. I was hoping to hear a bit about what the editors valued at home, what they look at every day and why they love them. Much less erudite I know, but extremely interesting.
